Maui Fires

The devastating fires on Maui have deservedly grabbed the headlines, and not just because of the nature of the tragedy and the part that a changing climate had in their proliferation.

It’s because Maui has brought so much joy to so many people over the years. If there was one place that you could bet on for a near-perfect getaway, it was Maui.

I’ve been lucky to visit Maui half a dozen times, and I’ve always enjoyed wandering around Lahaina at some point, having lunch, checking out the shops along the narrow streets, taking a surfing lesson, and marveling at the ancient banyan tree in the center of town. That’s it’s all been reduced to smoldering rubble and that close to 100 people have lost their lives is a tragedy that’s hard to get your head around.

That said, you can do something besides grieve for those who perished and mourn paradise lost.

You can help.

My colleague Kim McHugh sent me a handy link from NBC News that lists and authenticates a variety of charities that can and will do some good in this tough situation.
