The Deal: Save $200 on a 4-Day Bumps for Boomers clinic or $150 on the 3-Day clinic.

Backstory: One of the singular ski specialized camps of the Aspen Ski School, Bumps for Boomers is a highly innovative ski program that was designed by visionary instructor Joe Nevin. The idea is to quickly teach intermediate-level baby boomer and senior skiers how to ski moguls and how to ski powder. It has changed the skiing lives of hundreds of skiers, this reporter among them. Stay Aspen/Snowmass Central Reservations has spring break hotel deals during those dates that start at $150 a night.

Caveat: These rates are valid for the March 8-12 and March 15-18, 2010 clinics only.

It’s all a marketing ploy. Skiing is skiing whether you’re 8 or 58. Physics are physics. Why is “Boomers” any different. Educate me.

The single biggest difference is that they teach you on 98cm skis. These very short skis feel uncomfortable at first, but you get used to them pretty quickly. By the second day, I was routinely doing black mogul runs and even navigating double black mogul runs. Probably the hardest part was transitioning back to longer skis. But the clinic made a big difference.

Physics is physics but the mind and body differ with the boomer (and older) demographic than when you are younger.
The body: Slowing reflexes, easier fatigue, less athletic durability and knee, back and joint pain dictate the need for a different blend of movement patterns and technique.
The mind: more interest in speed control than speed and an overwhelming desire to avoid injury and physical therapy (because you don’t bounce back like you used to).
As Lance Armstrong said “when you are older you have to ride smarter” – it is the same for skiing. Boomers benefit from learning how to use a different blend of skiing skills that better match both their physical and mental profile. As we say – you don’t need a shot of courage to ski moguls. You need a new approach – that is most appropriate for the Boomer demographic.
