Word of Mouth
With spring break looming, ski rental shops are poised to do box office business. Because it’s easier to rent than schlep your skis through the airport, of course. But for the traveler who needs to rent, the idea of standing in an endless line in a crowded ski shop for rentals sounds like an ordeal. And if you’ve got fidgety kids in tow, it’s twice as bad. So enter Black Tie Ski Rental Delivery, which was started six years ago in Steamboat Springs. It seems that country singer Alan Jackson requested a local ski shop to fit him with ski gear in his room at the Sheraton, not in the shop. The guy doing the fitting was Joe Sternberg, and the proverbial light bulb went off. He partnered with local Ian Prichard and Black Tie was born. The idea is simple. Log in to BlackTieSkis.com, book your equipment, and a personal ski concierge shows up at your ski accommodations to custom fit your equipment. They do both skis and snowboards, using brands like K2, Volkl, Salomon, Dynastar, Rossignol, Atomic, Nordica, Roxy, Elan, Head and Stockli. You can find them in Aspen/Snowmass, Big Sky/Moonlight Basin, Breckenridge/Keystone, Crested Butte, North Tahoe, Park City/Deer Valley, South Lake Tahoe, Steamboat, Vail/Beaver Creek and Whistler. A competing company, Rentskis2U, offers similar service, but is focused solely on the Vail/Beaver Creek. Both have prices are competitive with rentals from the best ski local ski shops.
