THE DEAL: Alpine House, Jackson, Wyoming

WHY IT’S A CONTENDER: This bed & breakfast is located two blocks from Jackson’s town square. The look is Scandinavian, thanks to pine walls and exposed beams. Owners Hans and Nancy Johnstone are both former Olympians (she’s the biathelete and competed in Albertville in 1992; he did Nordic combined at Calgary in 1988).

WHO SHOULD GO: While some rooms sleep four, this civilized outpost is best for couples. Families with active children would be better off in a condo, where they have room to move.

THE ROOMS: There are 22 rooms with pine trim and pastel colors, outfitted with down comforters and plush robes. Most rooms have individual fireplaces or diminutive white porcelain stoves. Some rooms are on the small side.

MORE REASONS TO STAY: There’s a library with a fireplace, stocked with well-thumbed books on skiing and mountaineering. The Little Spa is just that, a small space in which to get a hot stone massage after a day on the slopes. There’s also a bona fide Finnish sauna and an alfresco hot tub. Breakfast is included in the rates. Banana pecan pancakes, Rocky Mountain eggs Benedict or a solid breakfast burrito are among the choices.

WHAT’S THE DEAL: Four nights of lodging and three days of lift tickets, as well as a daily full breakfast, is $408 per person, based on double occupancy, from January 1 to April 8, 2007.

INSIDER TIP: A stay here can be a ticket to the back country, as Alpine House also offers a Backcountry Ski Package that gets you a guide into the vast terrain of Grand Teton National Park. And if you’re made of sterner stuff, they offer a two-day winter ascent of Grand Teton.

CAVEAT: You’re not on the mountain. In fact, the town of Jackson is about 10 miles from the slopes. But you’re a block from the bus that goes to the ski area.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION: You can walk to the best restaurants in town, from the Old Yellowstone Garage to the Snake River Grill. And easily amble home after a nightcap at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar.
