What’s the Deal: Tassajara Zen Mountain Center is the most remote and oldest Zen monastery in the United States, is located 25 miles southeast of Big Sur, CA. Every year, Tassajara opens its doors to the general public for the annual guest season, which will take place from April 26 – September 9, 2013.
Backstory: Zen and meditation seekers, yoga lovers, and artisan foodies come for the serene environment. For the 2013 guest season, Tassajara offers disciplinary retreats in the following six specialty areas, all led by some of today’s leading teachers: Body Mind, Mindful Living, Spiritual Practice, Practice, Engaging Earth, and Creative Expression.
The Cost: A retreat such as “Zen and Swimming Dragon Taichi” combines Taichi, Qigong, and yogic stretching and runs from May 6 to 12, 2013 and is $440. Lodging is extra (see below).
Caveat: Note that there is no electricity in the guest rooms and that kerosene lamps are used for light. Bathing facilities are located in a bathhouse.
Fine print: Lodging rates are all-inclusive, including three meals daily and full use of all facilities. There is a two-night minimum stay on weekends. Retreat participants may stay in any cabin or dorm. Rates from $218 for single occupancy for a cabin room with a private bath. Shared housing is less expensive.
